Conference accommodation can be reserved during registration on a first-come, first-served basis. Rooms are available at Collingwood College and Hatfield College for the nights of 9th and 10th September at a cost of £60 per night. Please see the registration site for further details. Durham also offers a range of hotels for those who prefer alternative accommodation options.

The UK Antarctic Science Meeting will follow the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) Code of Conduct. The full code can be read here, but in brief:

• Participants commit to supporting the creation of an equitable environment, free from discrimination, intimidation, harassment, bullying or abuse. SCAR opposes discrimination based on such factors as ethnic origin, religion, citizenship, language, political or other opinion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or age.
• Participants are expected to conduct themselves in an ethical and professional manner. The sharing of diverse viewpoints is encouraged, and individuals are allowed to express their opinions openly without judgement, so long as viewpoints are not discriminatory. Critique should be of ideas not of individuals.
• Respect participant privacy: ask for consent before taking photos or videos of participants, and do not post online without their permission. Respect “do not photograph” poster or talk logos.
• Harassment in any form is not an acceptable behaviour.

If you experience or observe any unacceptable behaviour please report it to one of the organising committee as soon as possible either in person or via the conference email address. Reports will be treated in confidence. We will follow up with the alleged offender and submit a formal report to Durham University and their host institution if necessary.

Public transport

There are several express coach services daily from most major cities. Durham is well served by both regional express services and the local bus network.

For those travelling directly from the train station, the No. 42 bus departs from the outside of the train station roughly every 30 minutes.

The city bus station is a short walk downhill from the railway station. From the city centre, the conference venue is best served by the Arriva North East No. 6 Bus service, departing from Durham Bus Station typically every 20 minutes throughout the day.

The nearest bus stop to the conference venue for both the No. 6 and No. 42 is ‘Durham South Road Colleges’. This stop is a 2-minute walk from Collingwood College and a 5-minute walk from the Mill Hill Lane conference venue.

For those staying at Hatfield College, located within the historic Durham North Bailey, it is accessible from the railway station via the No. 40, 40A and 40C buses to Durham Cathedral. From there it is a 2-minute walk. From Hatfield College, the Mill Hill Lake conference venue can be accessed via the No. 6 bus service from New Elvet bus stop every 20 minutes, or a 30-minute walk.

Train

A number of train operators offer direct and regular routes to Durham Railway Station, including London and Edinburgh. Durham is around 3 hours from London, just over 3 hours from Birmingham, 2½ hours from Manchester, 1½ hours from Edinburgh and 45 minutes from York.

We are delighted to host two keynote speakers at this year’s meeting.

Dr Kate Winter is Associate Professor in the School of Geography and Natural Sciences at Northumbria University. Kate’s research focuses on the flow of ice and the transfer of sediment and meltwater through glacial systems, employing a range of geophysical techniques and interdisciplinary methods.

Dr Sharon Robinson is Distinguished Professor and an Australian Laureate Fellow at University of Wollongong, Australia. Sharon is a Climate Change Biologist and Deputy Director Science Implementation for the Australian Research Council Special Research Initiative for Excellence in Antarctic Science “Securing Antarctica’s Environmental Future”.

The conference dinner will be held in Grey College Dining Hall on the evening of the 10th. Please ensure that you have stated any dietary requirements during registration.
