British Organic Geochemistry Meeting (BOGS) 2023

We encourage submissions from four different themes:

• Biogeochemical cycles
• Palaeo-environments and palaeo-climates
• Novel biomarker proxies
• Environmental geochemistry

Abstract submission will close by Friday 23rd June 2023. Please submit your abstract using the downloadable template, and send to [email protected]

Oral presentations are likely to be 12 minutes, with 3 minutes for questions. Talks can be prepared in 16:9 or 4:3 format. Poster presentations will also be available. All poster presenters will have the opportunity to give a 1-slide/1-minute flash talk. Posters must be portrait and can be A1 or A0 size.

The poster session will be held between 4-6pm on Monday 17th July, refreshments will be provided.

Bart Van dongen, Professor of Organic Geochemistry from the University of Manchester will be giving the keynote this year titled:

‘Source, transport and fate of terrestrial organic matter along the Eurasian Arctic coastal margin.’

The Icebreaker Event will be held at Head of Steam, a stone’s throw away from the famous Durham Cathedral and near to the river. The informal event will run between 6-8pm on Sunday 16th July, as an initial get together to meet people attending BOGs this year. For BOGs first-timers, or those not wanting to arrive alone, there will be a pre-gathering at Hatfield College (time to be confirmed), and we will walk over together as a group to the pub. Food and drink can be purchased at the venue.

The Early Career Researcher Event will take place at the end of the conference between 2-3pm on Tuesday 18th July, in the Manley Room, Institute of Hazards, Risk and Resilience in the Geography Department. Attending the event is free, but prior registration to BOGs is required.

It will be a networking event where early career researchers will have the opportunity to hear from people from various career paths and stages in geochemistry about the route they took, and why they took it in an informal setting. It will be a great way to meet new people, so please come along!

Refreshments will be provided.

The conference meal will be in the beautiful Hatfield College dining hall at 7.30pm on Monday 17th July, and will be held after the poster session.

Getting here by road

Durham city centre is only two miles from the A1(M). Leave the motorway at Junction 62 on the A690 Durham – Sunderland road and follow signs to Durham City Centre.

Public transport

There are several express coach services daily from most major cities. Durham is well served by both regional express services and the local bus network. From the city bus station – a short walk from the railway station – a bus service runs every 15 minutes towards the Calman Centre at the Science Site.

Train

A number of train operators offer direct and regular routes to Durham Railway Station, including London and Edinburgh. Durham is around 3 hours from London, just over 3 hours from Birmingham, 2½ hours from Manchester, 1½ hours from Edinburgh and 45 minutes from York.

A taxi will take you from the station to the Science Site in about 5 minutes and you can walk to the city centre in 10 minutes.

Accommodation is booked at Hatfield College, offering 60 single en-suite rooms on Sunday 16th July and Monday 17th July. This includes a full English breakfast the following morning at £48.75 per person per night (if you book through us). If delegates pay the College directly for their accommodation the rate is £52.50 per person per night.

Vegetarian and vegan catering will be on offer during the conference as well as morning and afternoon refreshment breaks.

For the conference dinner meat options as well as vegetarian and vegan will be available.
